"I have loved to sing for as long as I can remember, and
there have been many phases of my development as a singer that I have enjoyed.
My first contact that I can remember was when I was 3 and
cried a lot, just to make my dad buy me a “cavaquinho” (a small body Brazilian
4 string guitar).
On those times I remember also, The Beatles and Elis Regina,
who crosses all my child years, and right now they are still the best for me.
Years later I learned some secrets of singing through Elis
Regina, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Sarah Vaughan, Stevie Wonder, Billie
Holliday, Lenny Andrade etc. I had no opportunity and money to learn music in
formal schools.
The first time I got on the stage as a professional singer,
performing popular Brazilian music, I had no doubts that I ´d always try my
best to sing the songs as well as I can.
One important lesson I’ve had learned from my
idols…always improve your singing as a wine through the times. Always
creating…music is an art.
In 1988 I graduated in Social Science – Sociology and
Anthropology at Universidade Federal da Bahia. One year latter I pass in a test
to became a professor in a state university. But my decision was music, however
I love to study and read. Two years latter I won a local important musical
prize “best singer revelation”- Caymmi Awards.
In 1993 I recorded a background vocal on three tracks in a
Jimmy Cliff’s album “Break
Out” (Grammy winner). It was an amazing experience. My voice is loud
and clear on Break Out.
In 1997 my first release,
“Every Night of the Week” - Movieplay-Brazil, finally
happened. It was a blues album…not necessarily the way I feel to sing the blues.
I believe I might sing better. And even though I’d never had been in London my
first album played in BBC radio station.
Singing the blues in Brazil is most of the time a solitary
mission. I am the only woman who has recorded two blues albums.
Right now my new album Old Poster-Mulambo
Records-Brazil is on the road. The thing that most excites me about Old
Poster is that we finally get all the punch and the groove into the
studio that we’ve gotten live. Edu Gomes, Alexandre Fontanetti
and I toured together so much, and we have so much combined versatility under
our belts, that doing this album was more like play than work. And we also find
a terrific material to do it." (Clara Ghimel)
Actually, I am rehearsing a new performance as a tribute for
three Brazilians singers that passed away.
